British Sign Language Course
The Local Network Fund administered by the Manchester based Community Foundation provided a grant to the Rochdale Borough Disability Sports and Leisure Forum. Part of the grant was to provide funding for one person to attend a level one British Sign Language Course and visual impairment awareness training course.
The Forum funded Dewan Choudhury to do the course. Dewan is a regular attendant at the forum meetings and is head coach of the Rhino's Deaf Football Club. Dewan is attending the course at Hopwood Hall College, Rochdale Campus once a week. The course lasts 1 year. On completion of the course Dewan will be able to provide improved coaching to his team members but also provide singing interpretation on any events, meetings and training linked with the Forum. He will also be able to advice on appropriate ways of communicating with people with hearing impairments.
We wish Dewan good luck on the course.

Visual Impairment Awareness Training Course
The forum has now also provided two 2 hour visual impairment awareness training courses. The course tutor was David Potter who is the teacher for Mobility and Orientation with RANS (Rochdale Additional Needs Service). Dave covered the basics of assisting people with visual impairments including how visual impairment (VI) occurs, types of VI, physically assisting a person with a VI and myths around VI. Dave brought lots of devices and implements a long with him that course participants could have a go with. Part of the session also included having a go at guiding a person. It was an excellent course with lots of really good feedback. The course was a big success with 21 people attending in total. Dave made the session very informative and enjoyable to attend.
We hope to make this a more regular feature of the Forums training calendar.
